Day 9, Sunday October 19, 2014
Today we drove from Positano to Sorrento. After a short break at the Hotel Ulisse Deluxe Hostel we took an orientation walk with our guide Ann. We ended the walking tour with a gelato making demonstration and had lunch at the same location. This afternoon we have a guided tour of Pompeii.
After getting to our Hotel Ulisse Deluxe Hostel, we started our walking tour of Sorrento. Sorrento is an attractive town with 20,000 residents perched on the Mediterranean. It is a safe town and everyone seems to speak English fluently. Perhaps they do because 90% of the town's economy is tourism. Sorrento is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast.
We ended the walking tour Gelateria David where we had a gelato making demonstration. After the demonstration, we stayed there for lunch.
The final event of today was a guided tour of Pompeii by our local guide Giovanni. Pompeii was founded about 600BC. It was a thriving port city with a population of about 20,000. Then, in August 79AD everything changed. Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii under 30 feet of volcanic ash. Pompeii was rediscovered in 1599 but excavations didn't begin until 1748.

Day 10, Monday October 20, 2014
Today is a free day to explore Sorrento on our own. Tonight we have a home hosted dinner at a local home in Sorrento.
Some of our group headed to the island of Capri this morning. We debated this, but decided to spend our time exploring more of Sorrento.
This evening the group was invited to a private home for dinner. There was so much food and we had lots of fun. We left feeling we were part of the family. The food was so good that we ate before we thought of taking any pictures. I took pictures of the whole group at the dinner but feel bad that Peggy got left out and we did also.
